Our Research

The Presidential Elephants Research Trust has been making contributions to elephant conservation and research over the years. The knowledge acquired by the dedicated team over time has changed how we perceive, manage and conserve elephant populations. Our team of Zimbabwean researchers and visiting scientist are working hard to record all demographic events in the elephant population: birth, death, adaptation, coexistence, oestrus and mating.

Our close monitoring enables the identification of habitat type, activity, geographic location, composition, independent males and families. The team analyses the family dynamics by monitoring the herd behaviours. We are looking forward to establishing a genotype database of all the elephants within Hwange to aid the identification process. We are constantly updating and maintaining our records.

Research is also being carried out on the coexistence between people and elephants, working closely with the surrounding communities and exploring methods and ways on how to improve the coexistence.

Our Researchers live and work from site in basic tents with very little facilities.  Water is trucked in with support from surrounding neighbours.  We are urgently requiring support for building up the research centre.
